I can’t for the life of me think of two golf players who were such complete polar opposites; in their style of play, in their bodies, in their personal lives, in the way Tiger is all bling and John is more penny auctions, in every aspect. In terms of golf players, John Daly is the antithesis of Tiger Woods, yet, somehow, for the PlayStation Move, his game has come out on top as the preferred choice for quite a few golf enthusiasts who like to play golf in the comfort of their own homes without the annoyance of having to go outside.

The first thing to consider is platform, and this is one area where ProStroke has the advantage. The Tiger Woods flavoured game was designed for multiple platforms, each one causing the other to make concessions for some type of game play that isn’t quite going to cut the mustard. However, ProStroke was created specifically for the PlayStation with Move, and it shows. There are a lot of things that you can do with the controller that give you a lot of control over the action. You can hit a draw or a fade just by subtly moving your wrist one way or the other as you swing the ball. It takes a little while to master, but one you get it, you’ll not want to bother with the Tiger Woods version that forces you to set up your shots in their entirety before your swing.

Where the Daly game falls behind is in the graphics department. At this point, it’s a forgivable sin, as this is the first version of the game, but they are going to have to step up the graphics in the game and give the user a little bit of a better experience. The Tiger Woods version has been around for quite a few years and, as such, the nice people at Electronic Arts have had a long time to perfect the system. There is a bit of a limited view in the Daly game, with some players complaining that you seem to be a bit too close to your avatar when playing; not quite so close that you can smell the booze and cigarettes on Daly’s breath, but close enough to be a little bit annoying. But I expect that these complaints will be heard and that most of the kinks in that department will be worked out in time for the next version.

The real difference between these games is that the Tiger Woods version is for casual golf game players, while the John Daly ProStroke game is really for those who wish to spend a lot of time learning the subtle nuances of the game. It’s a perfect game for those who enjoy a challenge, and it’s even better if you’re a lover of golf, as well as one of golf’s most charismatic and storied players. John Daly isn’t going to win any athletic competitions against Tiger, but he’ll definitely win in the video game department.
